Are all brands & types of essential oils the same?

I am afraid to say, that no they are not! Like most people, I didn’t know much about essential oils other than they smelt good when used in my oil burner.  Since those days, I have learnt a lot about the world of essential oils, and that they are categorised by a grading system:

• Therapeutic (Safe for internal use, pure and unadulterated)
• Natural / Food (Natural oils that are organic or have been certified, but can still have chemicals)
• Perfume (Extended or altered oils which contain chemicals and solvents)
• Floral Water (Low quality, synthetic or nature-identical oils which goes into hair and skin products)

But, be warned! Not all essential oils are created equal. Essentials oils that can be found in the supermarket, pharmacy, health food store or online, can contain additives and synthetics or may have been distilled in such a way that they cannot guarantee a high quality of therapeutic constituents. This is why it is so important to know where your essential oils come from, how they are distilled and how they are processed. Don’t be fooled by cheaper essential oil products that are legally labelled as ‘Pure & Natural’ or ‘100% Pure’, they are actually only required to have 5% of the essential oil present in their product. You definitely get what you pay for and pure quality essential oils do cost more.

While scientists can duplicate the fragrance of essential oils, they are unable to duplicate the health benefits. Take Lavender for example, there are many Lavender fragrance oils on the market. They all smell like Lavender, consistently smell the same and can be long lasting, but have no health benefits at all. Many people complain of getting headaches or feeling unwell after using Lavender essential oil bought for shops, and this is due to the synthetics and additives that are added during the duplication process.

The purity of an essential oil is its most important characteristic. Proper methods of growing, harvesting, and distilling are crucial to maintaining purity. Poor production practices and the development of synthetic essential oil variations suggest that it is impossible to accurately identify a pure essential oil without scientific analysis.
